Pink October: A Month of Awareness and Prevention
1 in 8 women are at risk of developing breast cancer *
In October, let's support the fight against breast cancer to improve research into this disease which mainly affects women.
Pink October: What is it?
Every year, the month of October turns pink for a cause that concerns us all: the fight against breast cancer .
Initiated in 1985, the Pink October campaign aims to raise awareness of breast cancer, support those affected and promote early detection . The Pink October initiative was born out of a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the British company Imperial Chemical Industries . A few years later, in 1992, Evelyn Lauder , then vice president of the Estée Lauder company, founded the association Ruban Rose to increase awareness of breast cancer and promote the famous symbol of the pink ribbon. In France, breast cancer is the most common and deadly cancer in women , with more than 58,000 new cases diagnosed each year *. However, if detected at an early stage, it can be cured in 90% of cases. This is why prevention and regular screening are essential to save lives.
Why is prevention important?
Every year, screening saves many lives.
Everyday actions that can save us
It is essential to learn about self-palpation gestures to identify possible changes in breast tissue (lumps, balls in the breast, etc.). You should also observe yourself in a mirror to check that there is no abnormal redness or enlargement of the nipple or one of the two breasts. Learning to know your body and consulting a doctor if in doubt can make all the difference. You can find information on self-palpation and a guide on the Ruban Rose association website.
Screening
Breast cancer does not always manifest itself through visible symptoms. Often silent, it can develop without causing pain or visible signs. Early detection is key. It is a simple but decisive act that allows tumors to be detected before they spread. When detected early, breast cancer is curable in 9 out of 10 cases*.
Mammography is recommended every two years for women aged 50 to 74 and from the age of 30 for people who have people affected by breast cancer in their entourage.
Please note that breast cancer also affects men. Contrary to what one might think, 1% of breast cancers are male*.
Screening is free and simple. The public authorities have set up 3 organized screening programs. Doctors can also prescribe individual screenings. You can find all this information on the Health Insurance website.
